The trick is in hingeing

In order to loosen the ring, turn the movable main piece to which the ring is attached so that it hangs under the metal U. Then turn the main piece to the left. Slide the ring over the point between the U and the left half of the main piece, as shown in the above figure. It will glide off the right half and come to lie round the U and the left half. Now you can simultaneously push it over the U and the left half. The ring is released by the hinge.
