Name That Tune

How well do you know your popular songs from the 60s and 70s?
Can you identify the following songs from their opening line?
While your at it, you may as well name that artist that
made it popular. All of the songs except one or two
were top 5 hits and those exceptions were still top
10 hits (in the U.S. charts). So the songs are
well known even if their opening lines
are not but that is kind of the point.
