A Brief History of Spline (not by Stephen Hawking)
Not much is known about the origin of this puzzle. It may have started in 1940 as an example of Anguished
English given by H.L. Chace, a French professor who wanted to show his students how a foreigner's mispronounciation can
distort English. For this purpose he wrote "Ladle Rat Rotten Hut" (Little Red Riding Hood).
Later, I think in the eighties, the BBC broadcast the TV series "Allo, allo" which was set in
France during the Second World War. Anguished English was used to show Englishmen speaking
bad French.
In 1997 Bryan Wolf, Jeff
Mincy and Bill Bussick started putting strange quotes
up above a poster of Yoda (Star Wars) and this evolved into finding different ways to say "Do or
do not, there is no try" (finally they came up with, "Due war dune ought, their
his note rye"). They called these constructions "splines", and started splining famous movie quotes.
Splines (also called oronyms) bear a strong resemblance to a new game
called "Mad Gab".
I think splines are really fun, but they require good concentration and creativity. The collection
presented below is mostly quotes from movies or other well-known sayings and was contributed by the three friends.
How do these Splines work?
The puzzles are based on the idea of replacing one text with another so that it sounds the
same when read aloud. The Sound-sentence (red) must at least consist of good recognisable
English words; names are also allowed. The most elegant spline is one in which both the
sound-sentence and the source-sentence have an understandable meaning, but this is not a
rule.
Elegant example:
MY CROWS OFTEN DOZE
translates to:
Second example:
WEAR RAVEL THUG HOOD THYMES SCONE
translates to:
WHERE HAVE ALL THE GOOD TIMES GONE
Now you try these Splines...
Don't look at the answers too quickly - you will get the hang of it if you give it a try.
